US&J Year End Part I



30 — The Buffalo Bills’ new president and CEO Russell Brandon announces a new agreement to extend the controversial Toronto Series for another five years. Mo Townsend and Ryan Lawrence net 15 points apiece in Lockport’s 59-43 NFL boys basketball win at Ken West.
31 — Brooke Horning’s three-point basket with just seven seconds left in the game propels the Lady Panthers past Medina, 57-53, topping N-O girls basketball action. Horning finishes with 15 points to lead the Lady Panthers (9-1 N-O). Matt Toploski rolls a 225-609 in Lockport’s 6-1 boys bowling loss to Lew-Port.
1 — Lockport’s Lady Lions basketball team routs visiting North Tonawanda, 64-16, improving to 11-0 in th NFL and 12-1 overall. Alyssa Wagner chips in with nine rebounds for the blue and gold. LHS junior Charlie Sobieraski nets 11 points in a boys basketball 45-32 win at NT.
2 — LHS junior Derek Secord wins both the 50 and 100 freestyle finals at the NFL Boys Swimming Championships. Head coach John Sullivan’s Lions finish second. Lockport’s Brittany Wright bowls a 205 single and 600 series to earn All-Tournament Team honors at the Roy Sommers Invitational at Thruway Lanes.
3 — Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco is named Super Bowl XLVII Most Valuable Player as the Ravens defeat the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31, in New Orleans. Beyonce performs at halftime. Former Buffalo player Brian Campbell scores the winning goal as the Florida Panthers defeat the Sabres, 4-3.
4 — Two LHS wrestling standouts, Kirk Feeney (138) and Marshall Taylor (220) earn first-place finishes at the Class AA Tournament. The cause of Sunday’s 34-minute Super Bowl blackout is under intense investigation. The Indiana Hoosiers are the No. 1-ranked men’s college basketball team in the nation.
5 — Lewiston-Porter’s Nick Mansour pours in 27 points, but it isn’t enough as Lockport gets 11 points apiece from Mo Townsend and Phil Crenshaw in a 54-36 NFL boys basketball win over the visiting Lancers. Roy-Hart’s quartet of Jeff Durbin, Roy Phipps, Luke Brauer and Lyle Wagner take top honors in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay events at the 2012-13 N-O Boys Individual Championships at Akron High School.
