Reaching new heights

US&J Year End Part I

6 — Michele Cyr (1985), Albert Hurst (1966) and Tracey Stoddard (1991) are inducted into the Starpoint Athletics Wall of Fame. Contributing US&J sports columnist Ethan Randall says the young Lockport basketball Lions are playing well under head coach Dave Gilson.
7 — Bryan Geise tops visiting Newfane with a game-high 21 points as head coach Eric Klumpp’s Panthers defeat Akron, 52-37, topping N-O boys basketball action. Katie Shaw nets a dozen points for the Lady Panthers in a 45-35 loss to Akron in the Blue Zone.
8 — Thomas Vanek talks about his recent game-winning goal in a shootout as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the visiting Montreal Canadiens, 5-4, at the First Niagara Center. Excess snow and poor driving conditions cancels all Western New York high school sporting events.
9 — Lockport junior Marshall Taylor is the No. 1 seed at 220 pounds at the 2012-13 in the Division I state qualifier slated this weekend at UB. The Sabres win their second straight game, 3-2, at the Islanders.
10 — Roy-Hart’s Drew Hull (145) and Lockport’s Marshall Taylor earn return trips to the state meet with dominating wins at the Division I state qualifier at UB. Boston snaps Buffalo’s two-game win streak with a 3-1 win at the FN Center. Veteran Bills players LB Nick Barnett and strong safety George Wilson are released by recently-hired Billls head coach Doug Marrone.
11 — LHS junior sharpshooters Colin Dougherty (19 points) and Ryan Lawrence (16) combine for 35 points in Lockport’s 57-38 boys basketball victory over visiting Kenmore East on Senior Night in the Lions’ Den. LHS seniors Kalin Mitchell, Omaro Luke and Khari Demos are honored before the game, along with their parents. The Sabres blank the Sens 2-0.
12 — The local wrestling community is shocked by the International Olympic Committee’s announcement to get rid of wrestling from the summer games beginning in 2020. “This will chase a lot of dreams away,” says Lockport boys varsity wrestling head coach Joe Scapelliti. “My first thoughts were, ‘This can’t be.’ “ says disappointed Hall of Fame wrestling coach Dick Lang of Royalton. Adds Barker coach Bill Bruning, “We’re going to find a way to bring it back and make it work.”
