19 — Olivia Kelkenberg scores12 points and Emma Lindke adds 7, but it isn’t enough as Roy-Hart loses to Akron, 29-28, in a sectional Class B-2 girls basketball pre-quarterfinal contest. Ondrej Pavelec makes 29 saves as the visiting Winnipeg Jets beat the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1.
20 — LHS junior Ryan Lawrence says he ate Wheaties for breakfast, following his 19 point-performance in Lockport’s 79-37 win over visiting Orchard Park in a Section VI Class AA boys basketball pre-quarterfinal contest in the Lions’ Den. Lawrence nets Lockport’s first 9 points in the contest. The Sabres fire Lindy Ruff as head coach after 16 seasons. Rochester Amerks head coach Ron Rolston is named interim head coach.
21 — Tonawanda’s Pete Maduri edges Lockport’s Mike Bedord 389-375 in the two-game finals of the 22nd annual Tri-City Masters Bowling Championship at Island Lanes. It’s a new coach, but the same old Sabres in a 3-1 loss at Toronto.
22 — Lockport seniors Alex Reid (long jump) and David Pollack (long jump), along with freshman Morgan Evans (pole vault) all qualify for the state indoor track meet March 2 at Cornell. Clarence’s Ryan Funk cans 33 in a 65-54 boys basketball victory over visiting Lockport in a Section VI Class AA boys basketball quarterfinal.
23 — Mario Grant tops DiMillo’s defense with 21 points, while Mike Benedict adds 12 in a 68-45 YMCA Men’s Basketball League win over Groff’s Tavern. Freshman Erica Bradley scores 15 points for Starpoint in a Section VI Class A-2 girls basketball quarterfinal 51-38 loss to Cheektowaga.
24 — Roy-Hart senior Drew Hull claims the state 145-pound title at the state wrestling meet in Albany. Hull defeats Franck Garcia of Norwich (Section IV), 2-0, in the finals. LHS junior Marshall Taylor is sixth at 220 pounds. Jimmie Johnson opens the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule by winning the Daytona 500.
25 — Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson is released. John Godfrey reports that Lockport Little League is accepting registrations this week at Tops Friendly Markets on South Transit Road. Tom Brady agrees to a three-year, $27M contract extension with the Patriots.
