US&J Year End Part II



2 — The Buffalo Sabres select Finish defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen with their first pick — eighth overall — in the NHL Draft. With the 16th pick overall, the Sabres select Russian-born blueliner Nikita Zadorov.
3 — The 2013 Erie Barge Canal Fishing Derby opens on canal waters between Albion and the Tonawandas. The Buffalo Sabres waive forward Nathan Gerbe. Bill Quade aces the 145-yard No. 6 hole at the Lockport Town & Country Club.
4 — Sanborn’s Chad Brachmann takes the top spot away from Dale Planck of Homer on lap 5 and never looks back, winning the $5,000, 75-lap “Battle of the Border” at Ransomville Speedway. Pendleton’s Lucas Smith is the early adult sheephead class leader in the Erie Canal Fishing Derby.
5 — Lockport’s Jeff Kinney and Gasport’s George Frombgen each catch tagged fish in  the Erie Barge Canal Fishing Derby. Both earn $150 in fishing merchandise. Lockport’s Jonah Shufelt is the Northern Pike adult class leader in the derby.
6 — Marion Bartoli of France wins the women’s singles title at Wimbledon. The Buffalo Bisons have gone 19-30 since May 16. The easier your golf swing, the better you play says local golf columnist Ken Ruggiero.
7 — The Buffalo Sabres reacquire defenseman Henrik Tallinder from the New Jersey Devils for prospect Riley Boychuk. Andy Murray breaks a 77-year-old British drought by winning the men’s singles title at Wimbledon.
8 — Mike Sanford claims five wins and adds both the high single scratch of 49 and the high, five-game handicap of 412 to spark the Barker Ringers to a 22.5-7.5 victory over the Moose Club II, topping Lockport Horseshoe League action at Outwater Park.
9 — Middleport’s Jacob Velesko leads the carp division in the Erie Canal Fishing Derby. Lockport’s Jonathan Frey is the walleye division leader. Defensemen Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer and forward Brendan Shanahan are among five elected the NHL Hall of Fame.
