Gang Green open on Sept. 7

LRFC will also play this weekend in Lake Placid

LOCKPORT —

The Lockport Rugby Football Club will use a tournament in Lake Placid this weekend to tune up for its upcoming regular season, which opens Sept. 7 in Buffalo.
Now heading into their 29th season overall, the Gang Reen will compete this Friday through Sunday in the Can-Am Tournament in Lake Placid.
The team’s 2013 New York State Rugby Club regular-season slate has just been released, with the Gang Green scheduled to open on Sept. 7 at South Buffalo.
After a Week 2 game on Sept. 14 at Fort Drum, the Gang Green will return to their home field or “pitch” at 100 Davison Road, next to the Niagara County Golf Course, to take on Batavia in their 2013 home opener.
Lockport hits the road again for a match at Rochester on Sept. 28, then returns home to host Utica on Oct. 5. Rounding out the Gang Green’s fall schedule are an away match at Batavia on Oct. 19 then a home finale on Oct. 26 against Rochester.
The team had been practicing on Wednesdays on their home pitch.
However, following the Saranac Can-Am Tournament, the Gang Green will be switching practices to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Interested new players are always welcome.
A major pig roast team fundraiser is slated for Aug. 24. Tickets will be sold beginning next week.
The LRFC was established in 1984. The Gang Green earned a spot in the NYSRC playoffs in 2009, and a year later, placed second in the Rugby Ruckus Tournament in Rochester and won the Saranac Can-Am Tournament Black Fly Division.
For more information on the Gang Green, contact club president Anthony Wasch at 435-8151 or go to LockportRugby@gmail.com.
