LHS sports seasons begin shortly

Volleyball Lions get everything started on Aug. 31.

LOCKPORT —

Head coach Joe Whalen’s Lockport High School boys varsity volleyball team will open their 2013 season with a match at the Clarence Invitational on Saturday Aug. 31, according to official fall sports schedules released this week by athletics director Patrick M. Burke.
After matches at Williamsville South (Sept. 4) and North Tonawanda (Sept. 7), the Lions spikers will host Niagara Falls in their 2013 Niagara Frontier League home opener at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Coach Kim Lockie’s Lady Lions volleyball team opens its NFL season at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, against visiting Niagara-Wheatfield.
Meanwhile, head coach Jeff Hulshoff’s boys soccer Lions and head coach Mike Finnerty’s Lady soccer Lions will both open their NFL seasons on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The varsity Lions will host Niagara-Wheatfield at 4:30 p.m., while the Lady Lions will play at N-W.
Both teams will host their annual boosters soccer tournament Sept. 5-7 at LHS, which includes the annual alumni game.
Two more LHS teams will open their NFL seasons on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Head coach Dave Gilson’s links Lions will host Niagara Falls at 4 p.m. at the Lockport Town & Country Club, while head coach John Beatty’s Lady Lions tennis team will host Kenmore East at 4 p.m. at the LHS courts.
The LHS football Lions will open their 2013 Section VI slate at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 against visiting Starpoint at Max D. Lederer Field in the annual rivalry contest between adjacent school districts.
The Lockport girls varsity swim team will open its 2013 NFL season with a match against Kenmore West at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the LHS pool.
Head coach Bob Eberhardt’s boys and girls cross country teams will open their seasons at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 against Grand Island and Lewiston-Porter at Bond Lake.
