Blue Devils spoil Lions' Homecoming

Visiting Kenmore West beats Lockport in flag-filled affair, 34-12.

LOCKPORT —

When the flag weren’t flying Saturday, Kenmore West senior tailback Alex Price had an outstanding afternoon, scoring three touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils over Lockport, 34-12, in a Section VI Class AA contest.
In a bizarre game in which neither team could gather any momentum due to the uncharacteristic excessive amount of penalties — flags before or after virtually every play — head coach Rich Harris’ Blue Devils (4-2 AA, 4-2 overall) secured home field advantage for the first round of the AA playoffs. The Lions (1-4 AA, 2-4 overall) will need a win in their regular-season finale next Saturday over winless West Seneca West to clinch a postseason berth.
Blue Devils head coach Rich Harris was asked whether it was difficult establishing any rhythm in the contest, after Ken West was penalized 13 times for 123 yards, and the Lions were flagged 10 times for 69 yards.
“Yes I was very shocked and I don’t know what to say,” Harris said. “They’ve got five officials out there and they’re making a case to have five officials at all the games in the future. I couldn’t believe it, really and I’m not going to comment on it any more, but that’s adversity too for a football team. We get something started and then we have to go backwards and we’re on long drives.”
The Blue Devils benefitted from a questionable pass interference call on third and 10 on their opening drive, then opened the scoring on a 5-yard run by Price (17 carries, 43 yards, TD rushing) around the left side. Senior kicker Brandon Salas booted the extra pont and the visitors led 7-0 before the pizza arrived.
Ken West made it 15-0 moments later when the Lions blew a defensive pass coverage. Blue Devils senior quarterback Adam Fron (9 of 17 passing, 241 yards, 2 TDs) hit wide open sophomore wide receiver Terrell Ford and Ford could have made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before sprinting 74 yards untouched to the endzone. Sophomore Deangelo Walker added the conversion run.
