Lions host state champs on Saturday

Head coach Greg Bronson's team looking at tough VI schedule

LOCKPORT — Lockport High School’s formidable Section VI varsity football schedule opens with a doozy on Saturday when the Lions host   state Class AA-champion Orchard Park to Max D. Lederer Field.

Head coach Greg Bronson’s Lions are coming off a 4-4 season a year ago, during which more than a dozen starters were underclassman.   The resulting 2012 Lions roster is rich in experience and talent, led by senior running back James Chambers (No. 23), the   team’s top rusher a year ago with 564 yards on 89 carries (6.3 ypc) and 10 touchdowns. Chambers also caught nine passes for   149 yards and a TD.
“This year, we want to see his best effort all of the time,” Bronson said. “The sky’s the limit for James.”
Also returning to the Lions’ backfield this season are junior quarterback Daniel Bronson, who threw for 442 yards and two   touchdowns as a starting sophomore in 2011 and senior running back Mitchell Evans, the team’s second leading rusher in 2011   with 406 yards and six scores.
Senior R.D. Hillman returns at wide receiver. Hillman was among Lockport’s top receivers last season, averaging a whopping   24 yards per grab.
Key losses to graduation include strong two-way players in Luke Hinton, Ezra Nwachukwu and Luke DePriest. Coach Bronson also   threw out the name of former Lions assistant coach Joe Scapelliti as among his key losses this fall. Scapelliti stepped down   in order to spend more time with his young family. New to the Lions’ staff is assistant coach Jeff Rogowski, who spent nine   years coaching junior varsity football at JFK.
The Lions are big and experienced on the offensive and defensive lines, led by 6-3, 260-pound senior Khari Demos. Also back   on the line are senior stalwart Tommy Furlong, a top track shot put and discus thrower last spring, as well as senior Stephano   Anzalone.
