Lakemen advance in Class C playoffs

efense sparks Wilson past Westfield 27-8

Friday night, after dismantling the Westfield Wolverines at Walter J. Hutchison Stadium, the Wilson football team gathered together on the field. Several coaches addressed the team, and as they finished, the players gathered together into a tighter circle, put their hands together and yelled, “Ralph!”
They were referring to Ralph Wilson Stadium, where the Section VI finals are held. If Friday’s 27-8 quarterfinal victory over the Wolverines was any indication, they sure were serious.
The second-seeded Lakemen (6-2) dominated defensively, forcing the Wolverines (5-3) into five turnovers and scoring a touchdown
of its own. The unit pitched a shutout, with Westfield’s only score coming off a kickoff return.
The Wilson offense took advantage of the defense’s play, scoring twice off turnovers.
“Our defense played phenomenally,” Wilson coach Bill Atlas said. “They pitched a shutout. I told them before the game that great defenses don’t break. They can bend, as long as they don’t break. We didn’t break tonight.”
The defensive effort was led by senior linebacker Steve Szuba, who had four of the five turnovers with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
“That was probably the best all-around game we’ve played since I’ve been here,” said Szuba, who missed most of last season with a knee injury. “It was total team focus. We all have the same goal, and that’s to get to the Ralph.”
The Lakemen opened the scoring in the second quarter, scoring on a 7-play drive that started a their 12 after the Wolverines failed to convert a fourth down. Senior running back Chris Reid had the big gain, taking a toss 32 yards down the left sideline.
The run set up junior Tim Walch’s 14-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Nick Bell. Dan Myrto kicked the extra point to give the Lakemen a 7-0 advantage.
