Reid selects Daemen College

LHS senior will play soccer, study accounting

Alex Reid spoke softly and carried a Giant Sequoia throughout his athletic career at Lockport High School.
On the soccer field he had great touch. In track, he couldn’t be touched.
A student athlete with blazing speed that guided him throughout record-breaking indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, and the sixth highest scorer in Lions boys varsity soccer history, signed a National Letter of Intent this week to attend Daemen College on an academic and athletic scholarship.
Alex, the son of Rick and Sally Reid, was joined by his parents, as well as LHS boys varsity soccer coach Jeff Hulshoff and Lockport athletics director Patrick Burke at a brief ceremony Monday in the high school Library.
Alex said he chose Daemen, located in Amherst, because he liked the team’s coach, Mark Spacone. He plans to play soccer, run track and study accounting.
“I guess my favorite sport is soccer,” he said. “I’ve played the sport since I was four. I like the team aspect of it.”
Alex wished to thank all of his coaches and teammates who have helped him along the way — and especially his parents.
“I want to be remembered as a team player and someone who was fast,” Alex said.
On the soccer field, Alex will graduate as a senior All-American, All-Region, All-New York State First Team, All-Western New York First Team and repeat selection as Niagara Frontier League Player of the Year.
He was an All-Western New York First Team honoree a year ago as well. He’s been an NFL First Team all-star for three straight seasons.
“I’ve known Alex since he was very young. You can never say a bad word about him. He’s a great all-around athlete — tenacious — and going to the ball all the time,” Hulshoff said of his 60 career goal scorer. Reid played four years under Hulshoff and led the team the team to several Niagara Frontier League and sectional titles along the way.
