A league of their own

Byrne's talented Lady lacrosse Lions return to action Tuesday

You can't call it the Niagara Frontier and it's not necessarily Section VI Class A, but even without a specific league to compete in, the Lockport Lady Lions lacrosse team is there to make some noise.
“They haven't quite nailed us down as far as a league,” said returning LHS head coach Colleen Byrne. “We're not really Niagara Frontier League like last year.”
Lockport returns several respected senior mainstays of the LHS girls programs, led by senior tri-captains, Roserita DiMillo, Missy Hook and Sarah Quirk.
DiMillo netted two goals, but the Lady Lions (0-1) opened their season last week with a loss at Orchard Park. They return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Frontier.
The Lady Lions finished an impressive 9-6 last year. Key losses to graduation include outstanding keeper Azilia Douglas, consistent goal scorer Lauren Wager and steady defenseman Paige Kelkenberg, who's attending Akron on a diving scholarship.
“Paige is a great diver, but she could also have played collegiate lacrosse. She was the anchor of our defense,” Byrne said.
Besides Lockport's capable tri-captains, key returners include seniors Jill Golding, Megan Mauer and Allison Sakowski.
“My returning mids are big in tyerms of experience, in terms of game sense, knowing what I expect and who we're playing — all of that aids in calming the other girls down,” Byrne said.
“We didn't have Jill for half of a season last year, so it's great that she's back as a senior, Hopefully, her and Roserita and Megan will have big seasons.
Lockport advanced as far as the VI Class A quarterfinals, losing 12-11 to OP. Key opponents this season will include the teams they'll play twice on their schedule, including Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda and Grand Island.
“The level of local talent keeps increasing everywhere,” Byrne said.
