Sobieraski hurls Lions '9' past Vikings

Mo knows N-O softball; Lady Spartans continueto roll in ECIC.

The difference in Monday’s Niagara Frontier League baseball contest at Outwater Park was a UB-bound Lockport senior and several unsung performances.
Lions’ senior right-hander Charlie Sobieraski tossed a complete-game four-hitter and Steve DiCarlo and Kyle Waple stepped into starting roles without a hitch as Lockport edged visiting Grand Island, 3-2, at Outwater Park.
The Bulls-bound Sobieraski fanned eight en route to the victory, then helped his own cause at the plate with not one, but two home runs over the Outwater fence.
The blue and gold jumped out to a 1-0 when senior Brad Wroblewski — a starting player on the 2013-14 Section VI-champion LHS boys volleyball team — walked and stole second. The athletic Wroblewski promptly stole third, then headed home on an overthrow to third.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Sobieraski led off with a line-drive homer over the left field fence to make it 2-1 Lockport. Chuck’s one-out solo blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth gave LHS a 3-1 lead.
The Vikings managed to make it close in the seventh, but with one out and the tying run on second, Sobieraski lowered the boom with two straight strikeouts to end the game.
“I was extremely proud of the way we rallied behind each other today,” said Lions assistant coach Mike Sobieraski.
“We were down two starters. Steve and Kyle stepped in and did a great job for us. Tyler Fraass and Dave DiTullio also shined defensively.”
Next up, the Lions (5-2 NFL) play at North Tonawanda at 4:45 p.m. today.
