Track Lions sweep

HS ROUNDUP (55/14): Fredonia-bound Sanford is triple winner in win over GI.

Brittany Sanford ran circles, Rachel Williams swept the throws and Kristen Sawyer soared to another win in the pole vault, as the Lockport High School boys and girls track teams posted dominating Niagara Frontier League victories Tuesday over visiting Grand Island.
The Lions won, 114-27, while the Lady Lions prevailed, 120-21, as both teams improved to 4-0 in the league this season under Lockport’s six-year head coach Miles Patterson.
“Team success breeds individual success. Everyone tries to compete every day and therefore they get better and it’s a healthy, positive competition throughout the year,” Patterson said.
Lockport’s girls team benefitted from one triple winner and three double winners in beating the Vikings handily on the best day weather-wise so far this year for outdoor running and jumping.
The LHS girls volleyball and track star Sanford earned victories in the 100 high hurdles (personal-best :17.4), the 200 dash (:27.3) and the long jump (16 feet, 5 inches) on a crisp, sunny day at historic Max D. Lederer Field.
Sanford came close to career bests in all events in another solid outing for the Fredonia-bound senior, who plans to study music and possibly play volleyball in college.
“My times are moving up and today I ran my best 100 hurdles so I’m very happy with where I’m at right now,” Sanford said.
Lang, one of Lockport’s all-time great female distance runners, came home first in both of her specialties, the 1,500 (5:04.2) and the 3,000 (11:43.9).
“I’m way better than where I wanted to be at this point in the year,” said Abbey, who plans to study either sports management or music in college.
“I haven’t had a real good meet yet, where I just focused on one event to do really well,” she said. “But I’ve been training hard and lately I’ve been running some road races. As far as college, I visited a few over Easter break. I’m interested in studying sports management or someting in music or theater. I haven’t really decided, yet.”
