Net Lions open season next week

Napoli, Reid once again lead Lockport's boys tennis team

Some key losses are offset by a number of key returners this spring on the Lockport High School boys varsity tennis team, which opens its 2014 Niagara Frontier League season next week, possibly Monday, weather permitting.
Head coach Dave Shambach’s Lions finished 6-8 in the league (fifth place) a year ago. A key loss to graduation is Jeremy Cogovan, a 2013 co-captain and second singles standout, who is serving his country in the United States Navy. Opting not to return is senior Luke Sciandra, an All-NFL Third Team selection in 2013.
Returning starters for the blue and gold include senior co-captains Bailey Reid and J.J. Napoli. Reid will return to play at first singles and Napoli will move up from third to second singles.
“This year’s team is looking fairly deep,” said the soccer standout Reid at practice this week. “I wasnt expecting to see so many good players come out. Hopefully we can make a drive for the league championship and some of us can get to states.”
Added the golf standout Napoli, “For the past few years, Bailey and I have had a good thing going. We want to do good in our senior year and hopefully bring home an NFL title.”
Competing for a starting spot at third singles are Lions junior Evan Williams and freshmen Nick Guay, Brandon Reid and Chris Pawlinski.
“A number of players will be vying for both singles and doubles positions. Many will be playing positions they have not played before,” Shambach said.
Looking for starting positions at doubles are Williams, Guay, Reid, Pawlinski, seniors Najee Hillman and Brett Bynes and junior Evan Dick.
Rounding out the Lions’ roster are junior Brandon Metzinger, sophomore Vincent Lombardo (10), freshman Antonio Faraci, eighth grader Mitchell Niles and seventh grader Brad Britt.
“North Tonawanda will continue to be very strong,” Shambach said. “They’ll be led by four-year all-leaguer Andrew Lemar, a state tourney competitor last year with his brother, John, who’s now playing tennis at Daeman College.”
Other expected good teams in the league this year will be Grand Island, Niagara-Wheatfield, Lewiston-Porter and Kenmore West, Shambach said.
“We’ll be competitive — possibly deeper than in 2013,” he said. “It will be a challenge to move up in the standings.”
Shambach, a former Lions tennis player, has been coaching at LHS since 1985 and boasts an all-time record of 279-115 with the Lions.
