Sobieraski hurls Lions past Jacks

Wroblewski, DiCarlo, VanDenBosch club clutch hits for LHS

Winning pitcher Charlie Sobieraski did everything but babysit the kids on Monday, tossing five innings of no-hit ball and fanning 11, sparking the Lockport baseball Lions past visiting North Tonawanda, 10-2, topping Niagara Frontier League baseball action.
The UB-bound senior right-hander Sobieraski completed as dominating a start for a Lions pitcher in a home opener as ever been played, striking out the the Jacks' side in both the first and second innings, then fanning two in both the third and fourth, adding his 11th strikeout in the top of the fifth, while walking three.
“My pitch count was a little high — that's why they took me out when they did,” Sobieraski said. “If it wasn't for the way I pitched in the first inning, I might have been able to finish it. Oh well, I threw well and our defense played well behind me. That's all I can ask for.”
Chuck also helped his own cause at the plate with an RBI single.
Fellow LHS senior Brad Wroblewski added two hits for the blue and gold, driving in three runs and adding a nice diving catch at first on a cloudy, 70-degree day at Outwater Park.
“They were meatballs right down the middle and I just took advantage of what I got,” Wroblewski said. “I think this is the start of something big this year.”
Steve DiCarlo also drove in two runs for LHS (1-1 NFL), capping a four-run bottom of the first.
“The pitch was out over the plate. It felt good to get those two runs in,” DiCarlo said. “I was filling some big shoes for Charlie over at third base.”
Also recording two RBIs was senior Noah VanDenBosch, who clubbed a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to help put the game out of reach.
