Complete game “W” for Wroblewski

Lions senior southpaw stymies Falcons in 6-2 NFL win

LOCKPORT —

Lockport senior southpaw Brad Wroblewski fell into his comfortable role as the slow starter and devastating finisher on Wednesday.
Two first-inning Niagara-Wheatfield runs gave the visiting Falcons the early Niagara Frontier League baseball lead at Outwater Park, but after the Lions answered with three runs in their half of the first, Wroblewski turned it up a notch and completely shut down the visitors the rest of the way in a 6-2 LHS victory.
The game was a battle between two outstanding starting pitchers in Wroblewski (8 strikeouts, 3 walks, five hits) and N-W right-hander Mike Markelonis (4 strikeouts, 4 walks, 9 hits), and in the end, some savvy base running by the Lions proved to be the difference.
The win was a huge one for LHS, now 9-3 in the league, and still chasing once-beaten Niagara Falls for the league title with two games left for both teams. The Falls (11-1 NFL) beat NT, 16-7, on Wednesday.
The Lions have two games remaining, one today at Ken East (4:45 p.m.) and in what might be the finish of the year, Tuesday (4:45 p.m.), at Niagara Falls to complete a game tied at 3-3 in the 11th inning. If Tuesday's incomplete game is postponed by rain again, it will be completed at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Falcons designated hitter Matt Anderson clubbed a first-inning two-bagger then scored on first baseman Dan George's RBI single as the visitors led 2-0 after their first at-bat.
“Brad struggled a little at first and was locating at the belt,” said assistant coach Mark DeMartile. “We talked to him and calmed him down. We told him he just needed to work down, work in and work out. As soon as he started locating and got command of his pitches, he took the game over.”
Back-to-back walks to roadrunners Colin Dougherty and Nick Hamilton and subsequent double steal was just too tempting for senior third baseman Charlie Sobieraski to pass up. The .500-plus UB-bound slugger Sobieraski promptly lined a single up the middle to plate Dougherty and Hamilton and tie the game at 2-2.
