Lockport bows out in VI softball

Good news is Newfane, Starpoint advance

Lu Krawczyk’s clutch two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning sparked visiting West Seneca West past Lockport, 2-1, in a Section VI Class AA softball pre-quarterfinal contest.
Head coach Julie Kwoka’s No. 7-seeded Lady Lions plated their lone run in the bottom of the first, then held that lead throughout most of Tuesday’s well-played contest that featured no walks and no errors for either team.
Lockport junior Megan Schneider (2 strikeouts, no walks, 5 hits) pitched an outstanding game, keeping the Lady Indians at bay with help from a near-perfect defense, led by senior shortstop Allie Cavagnaro’s eight assists and one put-out.
But the No. 10-seeded Lady Indians countered with senior ace Tori Dzaak, who allowed just four hits, while fanning seven and walking none.
“Tori’s been with me for three years and she sure pitched a good game for us today,” said Lady Indians head coach Lori Potter, whose team advances to play at No. 2 Niagara Falls at 4:45 p.m. Friday in a Class AA quarterfinal. “She changed up her speeds well, hit her spots and stayed ahead in the counts.”
Schneider got the visitors out 1-2-3 in the first, with two assists from Cavagnaro at short. Playing her final game in a blue and gold uniform, Cavagnaro belted a one-out double to left center in Lockport’s half of the first. Fellow senior Shannon Krywcun ripped a two-out double down the left field line, plating Cavagnaro and the Lady Lions led 1-0.
West Seneca West’s Ryhan Chavanie eked out a one-out infield single in the second, but the athletic Cavagnaro scooped up a grounder moving to her left, touched the second base bag then fired to first for the double play to end that threat.
