Lady Raiders' defensive specialist will pursue sports, graphic arts this fall.

Barker senior, Jessica Hefferon signed a National Letter of Intent recently to attend Seton Hill University on an academic and women’s field hockey scholarship.
Jessica, the daughter of Steven and Tobi Hefferon, received a very substantial scholarship for athletics from Seton Hill, where she plans to major in graphic design and play field hockey with the Division II Griffins in Greensburg, Pa.
“Jessica, who has been a member of the United States Field Hockey Association Futures Olympic Development Program since 2008, has a tremendous work ethic,” said Barker athletics director Dave Carson. “Her competitive drive has resulted in her receiving several post-season honors and awards for the Barker field hockey program.”
Carson, as well as Barker field hockey coaches Judith Otto and Jeffrey Costello, joined Jessica and her parents at the recent Letter signing ceremony at Barker High School.
Jessica opened her career in field hockey by being named the junior varsity Rookie of the Year in 2007, as well as the Most Improved Player for 2008. She was a member of the Lady Raiders’ 2010-12 Niagara-Orleans League-champion, Section VI championship and state Far West Regionals field hockey championship teams.
The Lady Raiders’ team captain, Jessica was named Varsity Defensive MVP this past season and was a First Team All-League and Second Team All-Western New York all star, state scholar athlete and is the recipient of the State Tournament Sportsmanship Award for 2012. She has been the recipient of the Varsity Defensive Unsung Hero Award and Varsity Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, and Junior Varsity Player of the year in 2010.
“Jessica is a role model for the students and athletes at Barker. I cannot be more proud of her success, both in the classroom and on the field,” said Barker school superintendent Roger Klatt. Jessica boasts a 96.609 GPA.
Added Jessica’s parents, “We are so proud of the young woman Jess has become and all that she has accomplished so far. All of her hard work in the classroom and on the field has paid off as she is realizing her goal of studying at a great university like Seton Hill, while being afforded the opportunity to play field hockey at the next level.”
“Jessica is a hardworking, dedicated athlete who sees the field well, and is a team leader that helps to direct the defense,” coach Otto said. “Personally, I’ve enjoyed coaching her as she was a student-athlete who led by example. She will definitely compliment the college team of Seton Hill while pursuing her career in graphic arts.”
Jessica is also a member of American Field Service, Donate Life, Leadership for the Youth of Niagara County, Student Council, Varsity Club, Video Club and Yearbook staff.
Video Club Advisor and coach Jeff Costello said Jessica will be a great asset to Seton Hill in all that she participates in.”
“Jessica is very dedicated to the sport of field hockey, as she has played on many off-season tournament teams and in developmental leagues and has been a member of the USA Field Hockey Futures program for several years,” Costello said.
“She has also been very active in AFS and student government and works at Singer Farms Naturals when she isn’t busy participating in extracurricular activities at Barker. She has a creative side for developing both video and graphics on the computer.”
Carson added, “I’m excited that Jessica has the opportunity to continue to play the game that she is so passionate about. Jessica is an excellent model for all of the Barker student-athletes. She is proof that hard work and determination pays off in the long run.”
