Bills cut QB, re-sign C Wood

Leinart let go Friday following dismal debut performance

BUFFALO —

It didn’t take the Buffalo Bills long to make up their mind about recently-signed quarterback Matt Leinart.
The Bills released Leinart, a former Heisman Trophy winner, on Friday.
Leinart, 30, joined the Bills on Sunday as an injury replacement. The former first-round pick struggled in his only game with Buffalo on Thursday night during an embarrassing 35-13 loss to the Detroit Lions in Orchard Park.
It was the final preseason game of the year for both Detroit and Buffalo. The regular season begins next week.
Against Detroit, Leinart completed just 3 of 10 passes for 11 yards and two interceptions.
The move was the latest setback for Leinart, who has been unable to establish himself in the NFL following a standout college career at Southern California. He has had stints with four different teams over the past eight years.
In other Bills’ news on Friday, the team finally signed center Eric Wood to a contract extension.
The new deal is for four years.
Wood, 27, is Buffalo’s best offensive lineman and one of the team’s most valued leaders.
A publicly out-spoken critic against the infamous Bills-Toronto Series, Woods was selected 28th overall in 2009. He has started all of his 47 games with the Bills.
It was vital that the Bills lock up their top offensive lineman after one of Wood’s former teammates, guard Andy Levitre, left in free agency. Levitre signed a six-year, $46.8 million contract with Tennessee in March.
