Barker/R-H gridders open Friday

Team is riding a six-game winning streak from last year.

Looking to keep the momentum from a six-game winning streak which closed out last season, Barker/Roy-Hart is prepping for the rapidly approaching B North Division football campaign opener against visiting Albion at 7 p.m. Friday at Bruno Pacini Field.
Senior quarterback-defensive back-kicker Jacob Haight, a first team All-Division player last year, heads Barker/Roy-Hart’s veteran contingent. Haight kicked a 42-yard field goal with just three seconds remaining to earn Barker/R-H a wild 33-30 victory at Albion last fall.
“Jacob is our leader and playmaker,” head coach Bill Bruning said.
Their key returners also include seniors Amos Andrews (LB), Daron Woods (WR/RB/DB), Tyler Childs (RB/LB), Kolbe Greenwald (LB), Tim Flint (C/LB), Ben Kaiser (G/LB), James Brady (T/DL) and junior Derek Sears (RB/LB).
The 33-member squad is also looking for help from senior Colin Knoop (LB), juniors C.J. Fitch (FB/LB), Donnie Haag (DB) and sophomore Andy Xapsos (WR).
“We graduated a couple of good running backs (Brad Bobbitt and Brett Cole who were both All-Division honorees) and three offensive linemen but we’ve got some kids who can definitely help out on both the offensive and defensive lines,” said Bruning.
“They’ re working hard and we’re coming along. The big keys for us are to stay healthy and to have out kids practice and prepare hard every week.”
Barker/RH, which went 6-3 overall last year, also has a home game Sept. 27 against Maryvale at Middleport and another on Oct. 19 against Bennett at Barker.
