Bitter sweet victory for football Lions

Lockport defeats Starpoint, 7-0, but loses QB Bronson.

Some of the lowest scoring games in any sport can sometimes produce the most drama and Saturday was no exception for the Lockport football Lions.
In a defensive battle for the ages, the Lions defeated visiting Starpoint, 7-0, in a non-league contest at rain-soaked Max D. Lederer Field, in the Section VI opener for both schools. Lockport now leads the annual grid rivalry series between the neighboring large-school districts 5-1.
The thrill of victory for head coach Greg Bronson’s team was tempered by the stunning loss of their starting quarterback, coach Bronson’s son, highly-touted senior quarterback Daniel Bronson, for at least the next four weeks with a broken collarbone. Bronson (6 for 12 passing, 93 yards, TD) was injured early in the third quarter after scrambling up the middle for a 15-yard gain.
After the game, Bronson was treated and released at Millard Fillmore Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. The good news — if there is any — is that the break was clean, coach Bronson said, meaning Daniel will be out for four weeks in a best-case scenario and could return to the LHS line-up before the end of the season.
“Things like this are going to happen and this time it’s my guy, but every time it’s somebody’s kid,” coach Bronson said. “The other guys have to play. I feel bad for (Daniel), but I feel great for those guys who stepped in and saddled it up and they got it done.”
Just before halftime, Daniel tossed a 44-yard touchdown pass to junior Tyler Fraas. Sophomore Brandon Few’s extra point with 29 seconds left in the second quarter rounded out the scoring in a hard-hitting defensive duel.
“This was a man’s game out here today. We pushed them and they pushed us,” said Lions senior linebacker Mo Townsend. “I was worried we might come out a little soft today, but we actually showed up today and did what we had to do.”
