Bitter sweet victory for football Lions

Lockport defeats Starpoint, 7-0, but loses QB Bronson.

Fraas took over for Bronson at QB after the second-half injury and moved the ball when the Lions needed it most, killing time on the clock late in the game. LHS junior running back Nick Hamilton had a strong game running the ball, finishing with 97 yards on 17 carries.
“I was really nervous, especially in this weather and because it was the first time I played quarterback all year pretty much,” said Fraas who will get the start again this Friday night when the Lions play at Class AA-power Orchard Park.
Despite the weather, the Spartans showcased a promising offense that should wreak havoc throughout Class A this fall. Senior running back Evan Majewski carried most of the load, finishing with 120 yards on 36 carries.
“It was a good game and a great defensive battle on both sides of the ball,” said Starpoint head coach Al Cavagnaro. “Our kids came to play today. Lockport’s twice our size, but we love playing this game. We had our chances in the first half.”
Also playing well for the garnet and gray was senior QB Sam Terrazzino, despite the downpour.
“Sammy can throw the ball,” Cavagnaro said. “A year ago, with rain and mud, I would have gone at it with Majewski in the backfield, but the the rain hurt us today. Not so much Sammy — we just dropped a lot of balls.”
Defensively, the Lions were led by senior Javon Jenkins’ 6 1/2 tackles, including three for losses and a sack. Sophomore Andrew Bronson added five tackles and Townsend and A.J. Rivera added 4 1/2 stops apiece. Senior defensive end Marshall Taylor had “only”  2 1/2 tackles, but the Spartans spent most of the afternoon running the opposite way.
