Great start for swim Lions

Several Section VI qualifying times posted in two opening victories

A second straight dominating performance this week has head coach John Sullivan’s Lockport swim Lions at 2-0 in the Niagara Frontier League — and that’s not even the best news.
Six Lions, led by senior freestyler Derek Secord, have already qualified for postseason berths. Secord was a double individual winner in Tuesday’s 100-71 victory over visiting North Tonawanda and posted sectional qualifying times in winning both the 50 free (:23.3) and the 100 free (:52.44).
Secord went on to team up with seniors Scott Guyton and Bryan Wojcinski, as well as sophomore Austin Hinton to post a sectional qualifying time of 1:35.02 in winning the 200 freestyle relay.
Sullivan listed Secord, Guyton (butterfly/IM), Wojcinski (butterfly, freestyle) and fellow seniors Shawn Moore (freestyle/backstroke) and Chris Lachell (freestyle) as key returners on promising team that’s returning the heart of its roster from a year ago, when they finished 11-3 in the NFL. The team’s only key loss to graduation is diver Sean Kearns.
“We’re excited about the possibilities this season offers,” said Sullivan, now in his 14th season as head coach. “We’re returning all of our swimmers and hope to build on the many positive gains made last season. We’re extremely excited to see the progression of our younger team members.”
Secord, Guyton, Wojcinski,  junior Mike Dmochowski and sophomores Hinton and Magnus Cleveland all raced to sectional qualifying time victories on Tuesday.
Guyton also posted two individual sectional qualifying times on Tuesday. He swam a 2:15.61 in winning the 200 IM, then won the 100 butterfly in :58.77. Wojcinski was the runner-up in the IM race and also qualified for sectionals in that event, finishing in 1:00.87.
Dmochowski, Cleveland, Guyton and Wojcinski posted a winning and Section VI qualifying time of 1:49.49 in the 200 medley relay on Tuesday.
Cleveland also qualified for the Class A meet, slated Feb. 7 at Maryvale, in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:11.87.
