2012 Year End — Part I

Brad Angelo's year to remember

LOCKPORT —

PENDLETON — Chalk up 2012 as a positive one for Lockport professional bowler Brad Angelo.
Angelo, a former PBA Rookie of the Year, earned his second career PBA title with a dramatic come-from-behind win Nov. 10 at the Viper Championship in Las Vegas.
Angelo was also a top 20 finalist at the U.S. Open in February. In May, Angelo became just the second, four-time champion of the George A. Obenauer Masters Bowling Tournament at Transit Lanes in Williamsville.
His life-long dream of owning his own bowling house became a reality over the summer when he purchased the former South Transit Lanes on South Transit Road in Pendleton. It re-opened as Brad Angelo Lanes on Aug. 31.
Angelo’s breakout year, both personally and professionally, has been selected as the Union-Sun & Journal’s Runnerup Local Sports Story of 2012. The top local sports story of 2012 will be announced on New Year’s Day.
Other top local stories in 2012 include two successful light heavyweight title defenses by Lockport pro kickboxer Amer Abdallah (April 14 and Nov. 17) before sold-out crowds at the Kenan Center Arena. The Kenan also played host to two sold-out pro wrestling shows in 2012.
There were numerous local and regional high school titles, both individually and by schools, throughout the year as well, and several locals, including Barker’s Emma Dewart and Lockport’s David Fluellen, made great strikes in college sports.
Race car driver Bobby Holmes of Lockport had another great year on the track, winning numerous feature races at Dunn Tire Raceway Park in Lancaster and ultimately claiming the Sportsman Division title.
Ransomville’s Steve Geltz made his Major League Baseball debut as a relief pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels.
Meanwhile, in football news, LHS senior James Chambers set new single-game and single-season touchdown records as head coach Greg Bronson’s Lions won the AA North division; and Lockport native Sean Kugler, the offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was named late this year as the new head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso.
