2012 Year End — Part I

Brad Angelo's year to remember

But the news is not all good. Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Andre Reed, who made a 2012 appearance in Lockport to sign autographs, got snubbed again by voters for the NFL Hall of Fame. The Bills hit rock bottom with their 13th straight non-playoff appearance and the NHL canceled all regular-season games through to 2013 at the earliest.
Here’s a look back at the first half of the 2012. The remainder of the past year will be featured on New Year’s Day.
1 — Buffalo Sabres new owner Terry Pegula and the hope he brings to Western New York hockey fans, is the Union-Sun & Journal’s Local Sports Story of the Year for 2011.
2 — The Buffalo Bills need a pass rusher and a wide receiver, says Deacon Don Watkins of Lockport, in a Leading Off opinion piece. The Bills fire defensive coordinator George Edwards and replace him with Dave Wannstedt.
3 — Drew Stafford and Nathan Gerbe score just 2:04 apart in the third period, lifting the Buffalo Sabres past the visiting Edmonton Oilers, 3-2.
4 — Consecutive wins by Will Skidmore (160 pounds), Steve Lakes (170), and Mike Tolli (182) helps the Newfane wrestling team rally past visiting Royalton-Hartland, 45-38.
5 — Kiki Dy doubles in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle and Brianna Gaughran doubles in the 200 and 500 freestyles as the Newfane Lady Panthers swim team stays unbeaten with a 122-47 win at Medina.
6 — Senior D’Antre Cullens scores a game-high 21 points, sparking the LHS basketball Lions past Kenmore East, 79-50, to regain the .500 mark in NFL boys basketball.
7 — Johnny Oduya nets an overtime goal as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1.
8 — The Lockport Family YMCA is offering upcoming youth and adult basketball leagues. Tim Tebow throws an overtime touchdown pass as the Denver Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 29-23, in their AFC wildcard game in Denver.
9 — Alabama defeats LSU, 21-0, in the BCS championship game.
