2012 Year End — Part I

Brad Angelo's year to remember



22 — LHS graduate Sarah Barrancotta, a sophomore second baseman on the Medaille College women’s softball team, belts a walk-off, game-winning single against Milwaukee, in Arizona. The N.Y. Jets sign Tim Tebow.
23 — Travis Turnbull nets his first NHL goal and the Buffalo Sabres beat the N.Y. Rangers at Madison Square Garden, 4-1. Ransomville Speedway prepares to open for its 55th consecutive season or DIRT racing.
24 — Thomas Vanek scores his first goal in eight games as the Sabres beat the visiting Minnesota Wild, 3-1. Ohio State downs Syracuse, 77-70, advancing to the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four.
25 — Tiger Woods wins his first PGA Tour event in 30 months, the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. NASCAR’s Tony Sewart wins a rain-shortened Sprint Cup race at Fontana.
26 — Named to the Niagara-Orleans League First Team in girls basketball are Roy-Hart’s Jesse DeWaters and Olivia Kelkenberg, Wilson’s Jamie Curry, Akron’s Kierstyn Sturmer and Medina’s Alba Perez.
27 — LHS senior basketball star Emma Sobieraski is featured in her school newspaper, The Towpath, which is published by the US&J. Drew Stafford nets a pair of goals as the streaking Buffalo Sabres move into eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 5-1 win at Washington.
28 — Canisius College freshman Rohn Pierce, a graduate of Newfane, earns the mound win as the Canisius baseball team beats St. Bonaventure, 4-3, in Olean. Rich Napoli announces that the Chestnut Meadows Retirees Golf League is hosting its annual sign-up meeting in April at the Niagara County Golf Course.
29 — Team captains on the Lockport girls varsity lacrosse team are senior Elise Hayden and junior Jamie Dimond. The Lady Lions are coached by returning four-year coach Natalia Doherty.
30 — Team captains on the Lockport boys varsity lacrosse team are senior Branden Gleave and junior Zach Brown. The Lions are coached by Scott Reddinger.
