2012 Year End — Part I

6 — Newfane senior Julia Wright is honored by Channel 4 and the Milk For Health Foundation as one of the top eight female student-athletes in Western New York. Niagara County Community College’s legendary coach Eric Knuutila is selected for induction into the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.
7 — Roy-Hart’s Rachel Phipps earns the 2012 Robert A. Kidera Scholar Athlete Award at Nazareth College in Rochester.
8 — Barker senior Tyler Scheving caps off his brilliant long distance running career by winning his second consecutive state Division II 800 meter championship. Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another is a sudden scratch for the Belmont Stakes.
9 — The New Jersey Devils stay alive in the Stanley Cup Finals with a 2-1 win over Los Angeles Kings in Game 5, cutting the Kings’ finals best-of-seven series lead to 3-2. Union Rags wins the Belmont Stakes in a photo finish over Paynter.
10 — Flips Gymnastics & Sport of Lockport is set to host the state Special Olympics Gymnastics Championships. Joey Lagano wins the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono.
11 — The Los Angeles Kings beat the New Jersey Devils, 6-1, to claim the organization’s first ever Stanley Cup. You can still sign up for the city’s summer tennis program, says director Dave Shambach.
12 — The Lockport Community Pool opens. Among the N-O’s First Team all-stars in baseball are Roy-Hart’s Ryan Metz, Zach Yates and Judd Jamieson; Wilson’s Brad Schlosser, Cameron Sidote and Pat Diez; and Newfane’s Scott Kneeland and Reid Weber. Oklahoma City beats Miami, 105-94, in Game 1 of the NBA Finals in Oklahoma City.
13 — First Team all-star selections in Niagara-Orleans League coed tennis include Barker’s Derek Fuerch, Newfane’s Jason Jolley and Wilson’s Zach Mozham, all seniors.
14 — You can sign up for An-Jo Baseball online. Miami downs Oklahoma City, 100-96, to even the NBA Finals best-of-seven series at a game apiece.
