28 — Rashad Evans of Niagara Falls out-points previously-undefeated Phil Davis in a five-round light heavyweight fight in Chicago. That moves Evans closer to a title shot against Jon Jones.
29 — Ransomville Speedway reschedules it annual Hangover 150 for Feb. 11, due to recent rainy weather. Andrew Harzewski nets the lone goal for the ice Lions in a 6-1 loss to St. Joe’s.
30 — Lockport’s Connor McCaffrey places first in the Boys 12-13 Division of the 2012 Elks Hoop Shoot Contest at the Lockport Family YMCA. McCaffrey sinks 18 of 25 shots and advances to the state regionals Feb. 27 in Wolcott.
31 — Ryan Miller makes 27 saves in a 3-1 Sabres win at Montreal, Buffalo’s first back-to-back NHL wins since November.
FEBRUARY
1 — Ryan Callahan nets the lone goal in overtime as the visiting New York Rangers beat the Buffalo Sabres, 1-0, at First Niagara Center.
2 — Newfane senior Gabby Balseca, the daughter of Jose and Michele Balseca, signs a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at St. Bonaventure University. Acclaimed former Lockport boxer Tony Ventura fondly recalls his former trainer, Hall of Famer Angelo Dundee, who dies at the age of 90.
3 — Tracy Maracle scores on a rebound, then sets up Ricky Eberhart with a late tying goal as the Lockport ice Lions tie Division I-leader Frontier 2-2.
4 — Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Andre Reed misses the cut for entry into the National Football League Hall of Fame. Shootout goals by Brad Boyes and Jason Pominville lift the Buffalo Sabres over the N.Y. Islanders, 4-3.
5 — Eli Manning wins his second Super Bowl MVP Award as the N.Y. Giants defeat the New England Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.
6 — Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff cracks three ribs in practice after getting hit by defenseman Jordan Leopold. The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team cracks the top 25 nationally.
