2012 Year End — Part I

Brad Angelo's year to remember



28 — Marissa Guyton nets 17 and Emma Sobieraski adds 16 as the LHS Lady Lions beat Frontier, 72-41, in a Section VI Class AA girls basketball quarterfinal. Roy-Hart grappler Drew Hull finishes second in the state at 145 pounds.
29 — Lockport senior Danielle Donorovich signs a National Letter of Intent to attend Trinity College on an academic and volleyball scholarship. Danielle signs away in the LHS Library, accompanied by her parents, Robert and Carolann Donorovich, LHS Athletics Director Patrick Burke and LHS girls varsity volleyball coach Elizabeth Pitts.
1 — Lions senior swim star Garrett Sheehan competes in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2012 state swim meet in Buffalo. Lockport native Bill Agronin, a coaching staple throughout this area for decades, including the Niagara University women’s team, now as an assistant at Medaille in Buffalo, is honored by Allegheny Mountain College Conference as its a 2011-12 Co-Coach of the Year.
2 — LHS senior Marissa Guyton does everything but don the blue man suit, scoring a game-high 29 points and adding 10 rebounds and three assists as the Lady Lions beat Jamestown, 73-51 in a Section VI Class AA girls basketball semifinal at Sweet Home High School.
3 — Starpoint senior Matt Schutt places second (:57.55) in the state finals of the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2012 state high school swim meet in the Burt Flickinger Aquatics Center in downtown Buffalo.
4 — LHS senior Tyler Laubacker caps off a brilliant varsity bowling career by leading the Section VI Team to its second state title in four years in Waverly. Laubacker starts with a 227-586, then rolls a 235-638. Laubacker and fellow LHS captain Jacob Swartz had single game averages of 210-plus this season for head coach Marion Singleton’s Lions.
5 — The Bills re-sign wide receiver Stevie Johnson to a five-year, $36.25M contract extension. The Sabres drop their road trip finale at Winnipeg, 3-1 and remain tied for 10th place in the Eastern Conference with Tampa Bay, four points behind the Jets.
