Swim Lions dunk the Falls

R-H boys, Newfane girls clinch at least tie for respective N-O titles

Secord, perhaps the most dominating Lions swimmer this season, cruised through the water like an Ohio class SSBN submarine, barely missing the state cut in the 50 freestyle by .18 of a second.
“I was happy to see a lot of the younger kids who moved up to varsity for this meet, like Andy Bronson and Ian Smith, swim well tonight,” Secord said. “I think we’re a little farther ahead than we thought we would be, but there’s still room for improvement. I think we’re right on course.”
Also posting an individual win Tuesday was Lockport freshman Andy Bronson, who earned his first-ever varsity victory, taking the 100 breaststroke in a Class A-qualifying time of 1:13.05.
“It’s a great feeling to get my first varsity win and to qualify for the class meet,” Bronson said. “It’s different from swimming a JV race — not a huge difference because it’s like any other race, but the competition is so much better.”
The Lions went on to win two of the meet’s three relays, with Mike Dmochowski, Jack Whalen, Bryan Wojcinski and Austin Hinton winning the 200 medley relay in 1:55.83, and Secord, Wojcinski, Guyton and John Patterson winning the 200 free relay in 1:36.41.
“We made some nice progress in goal times. As a program, we’re not where we want to be, but we’re progressing faster than we anticipated,” Sullivan said. “Coach (Kevin) Clark is doing a fantastic job getting guys ready for varsity competition. We brought up four guys the last couple of days and they’ve all made contributions. And the kids filling in for them at the JV level below haven’t missed a beat, so the future continues to look bright for Lockport swimming.”
The Wolverines (5-7 NFL) were led by diving competition winner JaRon Williams and 500 free winner Spencer Ventresca (5:46.81).
