British Invasion

Wallis says he's ready to rumble with Abdallah tonight

LOCKPORT —

Lockport’s version of the British Invasion opened with a minor chord at Lock 34 during Friday night’s official weigh-in for tonight’s inter-continental kickboxing fight card at the Kenan Center Arena.
Lock City light heavyweight and No. 5 ranked cruiserweight in the world Amer Abdallah weighed in at a lean, mean 184 pounds, but his opponent, European champion James Wallis of the United Kingdom, weighed in a little higher than expected at 195 — irking several members of the Abdallah camp.
Dispute aside, the weigh-in added more fuel to the fire for tonight’s heavily-anticipated WKA inter-continental main event. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight at 7 p.m.
“We’re a little disappointed that he came in so overweight,” Abdallah said. “But we ironed out the logistics and at the end of the day, we’re going to fight.”
Abdallah, who was joined by his parents and other close friends, was greeted by a loud round of applause on Lock 34’s outdoor patio, as were many other fighters in the Lace-up Promotions stable as they took turns stripping down for the WKA-sanctioned weigh-in.
“It’s a great crowd here today and it shows the tremendous amount of support we have in this community. This is why I love fighting in Lockport,” Abdallah said. “This is the strongest I’ve ever felt and this is the fastest I’ve ever felt.”
This year’s version of the British Invasion has nothing to with music and everything to do with a professional world title shot for Abdallah, 39, who’s being trained by Jeff Mayweather, Greg Jones, Corey Webster and Team Abdallah manager Ahmed Imamovic.
Wallis, 31, said he arrived in the United States on Wednesday, accompanied by three other others from his Port Talbot, Wales gym.
