THEATER: Arthur opens Artpark season

Arthur the aardvark is coming to Artpark, and he’s got enough fans to sell out at least one show.
Arthur Read, a character created by author Marc Brown, will appear with the rest of his friends from the book and TV series in “Arthur Live!” The stage show will feature the costumed characters in their own musical.

  • THEATER: 'Avenue Q' reviewed
What “Team America: World Police” started in the movement to improve puppets’ reputations, “Avenue Q” perfected.
Like the R-rated movie about a team of puppets fighting terrorists, “Avenue Q” uses puppets to take a frank yet humorous look at life.

  • THEATER: "My Fair Lady" at Cardinal O'Hara
One of the most popular musicals of all time makes its way to the Cardinal O’ Hara Performing Arts Center stage Friday night for a three-weekend run.
“My Fair Lady” will be performed by the Niagara Regional Theatre Guild at 8 p.m. Friday. The classic musical, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe and based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” is well-known to most musical fans, but there are reasons to keep coming back, director Dawn Marcolini-Newton said.

  • THEATER: Life is a "Cabaret" at NU
The performers in Niagara University’s production of “Cabaret” may be several generations removed from the show’s setting.
The meaning of the era — during which the Nazi party rose to power in Europe — has not been lost over the decades, though.

  • THEATER: Patrick Stewart, a former star ship captain, goes to Broadway
He’s a man who memorized Shakespeare for fun as a teen and spent 14 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He never abandoned The Bard despite commanding a star ship for seven years on TV’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

  • THEATER: 'Hairspray' returns viewer to golden age
The 1960s refuse to die. The 1988 film “Hairspray,” the musical comedy set in 1960s Baltimore, inspired a Broadway musical that romped the 2003 Tony Awards. That, in turn, spawned a film adaptation in 2007.

  • ART: Falls native to receive award
Niagara Falls native David Oliver will get an award Wednesday to pursue an original one-man performance of Vincent Van Gogh.

  • MUSIC: Local actress to bring Patsy Cline’s legacy back to the stage.
The two-woman musical “Always … Patsy Cline” will tell the story of the popular country singer’s life and feature 27 of her hit songs at the Palace Theatre in Lockport.

  • FAMILY: Sesame Street pals visiting Buffalo
If one thing is certain, the performers in “Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music” know when they’re having a good night.

  • ON STAGE: 'Stomp' brings the noise to WNY
What do 288 liters of water, 40 newspapers, 10 booties and three ball point pens have in common?
When in the hands of the performers in “Stomp,” those props are MacGyvered to make perhaps the most unique stage production in existence.
