THEATER: Arthur opens Artpark season

Arthur the aardvark is coming to Artpark, and he’s got enough fans to sell out at least one show.

    One of the most popular musicals of all time makes its way to the Cardinal O’ Hara Performing Arts Center stage Friday night for a three-weekend run.
    “My Fair Lady” will be performed by the Niagara Regional Theatre Guild at 8 p.m. Friday. The classic musical, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe and based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” is well-known to most musical fans, but there are reasons to keep coming back, director Dawn Marcolini-Newton said.

    The 1960s refuse to die. The 1988 film “Hairspray,” the musical comedy set in 1960s Baltimore, inspired a Broadway musical that romped the 2003 Tony Awards. That, in turn, spawned a film adaptation in 2007.

    Niagara Falls native David Oliver will get an award Wednesday to pursue an original one-man performance of Vincent Van Gogh.
  •  MUSIC: Local actress to bring Patsy Cline’s legacy back to the stage.
    The two-woman musical “Always … Patsy Cline” will tell the story of the popular country singer’s life and feature 27 of her hit songs at the Palace Theatre in Lockport.

    If one thing is certain, the performers in “Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music” know when they’re having a good night.
