THEATER: Towne Players to conclude 50th season

Female impersonation, embarrassment and drunkenness set the stage for the Towne Players production of the American farce “Whose Wives Are They Anyway?” which opens Friday.

The show, written by Michael Parker, revolves around two businessmen’s attempts to produce wives (who don’t exist) to accompany them on a weekend trip with their new boss.

“The cast and crew have been working hard and enjoying themselves (when it comes to) realizing and elaborating the situations that Mr. Parker scripted,” director Glenn Jumper said. “There has been much inventiveness on the part of all the actors involved, and the biggest compliment I can pay is that I’m looking forward to seeing the play.”

Jumper also recommends that those who come to see the performance attend a second time, as there are many laughs that may go unnoticed the first time.

The show marks the final production of the Towne Players’ 50th season. Many of the actors and members involved with the group over the years have gone on to play professional roles both in the Buffalo area and in New York City. Whether the actors’ involvement leads to a professional career or is just for the fun of it, the end result is well worth the effort, Jumper said.

“The thrill and enjoyment that goes with raising the curtain on a production we all have worked on is unmatched anywhere else,” he said. “While other groups over the years have disappeared, we have been able to continue bringing live theater to the community, and hope to continue.”

The Towne Players will continue their involvement in the theater community with performances next season of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” an original production of “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus” and a few other surprises.

“We are very pleased to continue performing in the Ken-Ton community,” Jumper said. “And (we) hope that we have made some small mark on it.”
