MIKE FINNERTY

Mike Finnerty’s soccer playing ended when he tore his Achilles tendon while a freshman at Canisius College, but that didn’t end his love for the sport.

The 41-year-old father of two is the junior varsity coach at Lockport High School and the coach of the girls under-12 travel team for the Lockport Soccer Club. He is in charge of player and coach development at the Kenan Center.

“Mike showed understanding and compassion for a little girl who only wanted to play soccer at a higher level,” said nominator Arnie Johnathan, a retired correction officer. “Through Mike’s teachings and coaching, my daughter’s level of play has exploded. But, when I was asked to assist, I really got to witness what Mike does and his impact on the girls he coaches and his devotion to his family and to the community.”

Finnerty, who wrestled and played soccer at Kenmore East, got his post graduate degrees at Canisius College. He teaches sixth grade science at Emmet Belknap.

A volunteer, he creates and carries out training clinics for various age level children on Saturday mornings at the Kenan Center. He also coaches special soccer practices on under 14-16 travel boys teams.

Cristina and Mike Finnerty have two children, Alex 13 and Elizabeth, 11. The family lives in Lockport.

Having children renewed Mike’s vigor for the game. He began coaching at the Kenan Center and continually updates coaching certifications. He designs, organizes and coaches spring break and summer soccer clinics for all age levels of players.

“It’s just a love for the game,” Finnerty said. “When I was injured, I fell away from the game. Coaching kids is one of my passions, watching kids grow.”

Johnathan said, “He has made a difference in this community by influencing his players as a positive role model and athlete.”
