MEDINA — Saturday is opening day for the 2019 Canal Village Farmers' Market.
The open-air market at West Center Street and West Avenue, operated under the auspices of Orleans Renaissance Group Inc., offers fresh-harvested local produce, local meats and farm products on a weekly basis. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October.
Returning to the market on opening day will be Roberts Farm Market, Human Farms, Gardner's Gardens, Kim's Kitchen Bakery & More, Bob Renko Sausages, Baker Farm and 810 Meadworks, along with several other vendors both old and new.
Some of the products available this season include local beef, pork, chicken, rabbit and bacon, sausage varieties, fresh eggs, local honey, lots of local vegetables and berries, and fresh baked goods.
Two new vendors this year are The Sweet Spot, offering baked goods, and Quaking Hill Farm, which sells fresh and frozen locally-raised chicken and rabbit, fresh eggs, honey, herbs and seasonal cut flowers, according to market manager Gail Miller.
Also new this year, Juan Gonzalez has relocated his El Gran Burrito taqueria to the market site from Route 31 east of Medina.
Additional vendors, community groups and live musical acts will rotate into the market weekly with new and different offerings. Niagara Wine Trail wineries will rotate in each week as well.
From week to week, activities at the market may include cooking demos, family-oriented events and, in August, Canal Kids programming. Picnic tables and umbrellas are set up and ready-to-eat grillables including sausage and burgers are sold on site.
