Lockportian singing lead with BPO this weekend

Kyle Vanschoonhoven

BUFFALO — Lockport native Kyle Vanschoonhoven is singing the lead in the classic French opera Carmen with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall this weekend.

Vanschoonhoven, an experienced opera singer, plays the role of Don José, a Spanish soldier who is seduced by Carmen, a wild Spanish gypsy.

Vanschoonhoven, a graduate of SUNY Fredonia and the Westminster Choir College, previously played José with the BPO after winning the (New York) Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Saturday night marks his first full performance of Carmen with the BPO.

Vanschoonhoven also recently completed an Adler fellowship program with the San Francisco Opera, and has performed with the Cincinnati Opera and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The BPO and its opera cast will perform Carmen again at 2 p.m. Sunday.
