GASPORT — A man crashed his car into a utility pole on Main Street while speeding away from a Niagara County Sheriff’s deputy attempting a traffic stop on his vehicle.
According to witness accounts, the deputy had observed the unidentified man texting and driving on Rochester Road near the hamlet, and when the deputy started to follow him, the driver turned north onto Main Street and sped up.
Witnesses estimated the driver was traveling about 70 mph on Main when his car went airborne, returned to the road, bottomed out and struck a utility pole near Church Street. The pursuing deputy found the man unconscious at the wheel.
First responders included personnel from Gasport Chemical Hose Co. and Tri Town Ambulance; Middleport and New York State police officers assisted the sheriff's office at the accident scene.
The utility pole, which held a transformer, was snapped in half.
