Middleport Fire Department was practically stuffed to the rafters with well wishers Monday night as the village hosted a reception for Police Chief John Swick, to mark his 40th year of employment by the village.

Joining village residents, Swick's family and friends in giving him a standing ovation were numerous area law enforcement officers. Mayor Richard Westcott presented the chief with a gold "key" to the village.

Swick's first day on the job as a part-time Middleport police officer was March 20, 1978. He was appointed chief of MPD on March 1, 1987.
